‘We’ve lost the bloody signal,’ Trevor shouted. ‘Look at this.’ He pointed to a trace on a computer screen. ‘It was working fine until it went round this bend just the other side of Camberton. Then it died.’

‘Is there anything out there that could interfere with the transmitter?’ asked Jack. ‘Power lines or something?’

‘No. Nothing. It’s farmland with a few houses once you leave the village. They must have found it, or it dropped off and got run over.’

‘Well, I fixed it properly,’ bridled Mel, ‘and it certainly wasn’t visible, unless you crawled under the car.’

‘An RTC?’ suggested Martin.

‘Could be,’ replied Jack. ‘I’ll ask Traffic to take a look for any signs. Meanwhile, it looks like we’ve been wasting our sodding time.’

‘Not entirely,’ said Mel, thoughtfully. ‘You know that road, don’t you, Jack?’

‘Too bloody right,’ he said. ‘Hard to forget some bastard firing a shotgun at you. What are you suggesting?’

‘Do you think they could be using that farmhouse? The one where three of the gang died? I mean, they wouldn’t expect us to look there, would they? Not after what happened.’

‘I did look, online,’ said Trevor. ‘Not long after the…attack.’ He couldn’t bring himself to say ‘bomb’. ‘There’s planning permission in place to convert the building into a health spa and luxury retreat.’

‘I presume they won’t put the building’s bloody history in the brochures,’ chuckled Mel. ‘Might be worth taking a look at the place, anyway.’

‘OK, Mel,’ replied Jack. ‘Nip out there with Sally when you’ve got a moment. That’s it for tonight. See you all in the morning.’
